History
The Case, Medical (Case) is a canvas medical bag initially issued to Australian medics during the Vietnam War. It is designed to carry enough medical supplies for up to 10 people and is a copy of the U.S Issue Case, Non-rigid, No. 3 (M-3 Aid Bag).
Initially, the Cases were produced in olive drab during the mid-1960s and 1980s. With the adoption of the M-1988 ICLCE in 1988, the Cases began to be manufactured with a DPCU camouflage pattern.
The Case was designed to provide medics with quick access to essential medical items, allowing them to tailor the contents based on the most common injuries they expected to encounter in the field. It features a large full-size back compartment, two half-size front compartments, a central open-top flat notebook compartment, and attachments for a shoulder strap. The Case can also be secured to a web belt or field pack.
Description
The back face of the Case has a 50-mm webbing strap sewn across it, with three channels that hold slide keepers. The sides of the Case have plastic V.S snap hooks that enable a shoulder strap to be attached.
The lid is sewn to the back face and has a square box shape that extends halfway down the front. It closes with a 25-mm khaki plastic side-release buckle and a khaki nylon webbing strap.
The sides have triangular sections of canvas that extend halfway down, sewn to the back and bottom compartments, with the tops holding the plastic V.S hooks.
The Case has four compartments: a large full-length back compartment, an open-top flat pocket, a top half-size full-length compartment, and a bottom half-size full-length compartment.
The top and bottom half-size compartments are stacked one on top of the other. The top compartment has a fabric hinge at the front, allowing it to fold back and rest on the bottom compartment when the Case is closed. When the Case is opened, this compartment automatically falls forward.
All three compartments close with black nylon zippers featuring double metal runners and khaki nylon webbing pull-tabs. Inside the bottom compartment, there are four 25-mm khaki nylon webbing loops sewn against the back wall.
